Hack: How to Get Yahoo Mail Beta

by Brad Isaac on April 25, 2006

The latest buzz out there is Yahoo Mail beta.  The next version is going to be the competitor to Google Mail.  But the beta is only being released to certain countries.

If you want to jump start the process you can follow these directions from Googlesystem

* log in to Yahoo Mail
* click Options
* select Account information from the left panel
* go to Member Information, General Preferences, Preferred Content
* select, for example, Yahoo UK
* click Finished
* go to Yahoo Mail
* you’ll see a page that says "It’s the New Yahoo! Mail Beta… and you’re invited."
* click on "Try Beta Now".

I gave it a try and it does work, but it’s not enough to make me switch from Gmail.  It looks good, but is sort of slow and the ads are much more prevalent.  Your thoughts?

Thanks Brad! I signed up for Yahoo! Mail waiting list months ago and I’ve never heard anything. This worked perfectly, even after I changed my settings back to Yahoo! US. Thanks for sharing!

Glad it worked for you. What do you think of the service so far?

Before there was Yahoo Beta, there was a great webmail service called Oddpost, which I was happily subscribed to for a number of years. Yahoo bought Oddpost in 2005, and all the features of Yahoo Beta (Outlook like interface, integrated RSS feeds, trainable spam filter, integrated calander, etc.) My personal view on this e-mail interface is: Oddpost was awesome, and Yahoo has not (yet?) come close to providing the same level of product. Unfortunately for those of us former Oddpost subscribers who had to switch to Yahoo Beta, the “new” Yahoo version does not include many of the most attractive features of the old version, including the ability to create subfolders, some cool customization options, and most importantly, . . . SPEED. In the last couple of weeks, speed has been improving, but they have a way to go before I’ll feel like my service is as good as what I had before. But I haven’t given up on it yet: maybe things will improve by the time the new interface is officially released, and maybe Yahoo will incorporate more features from the Oddpost interface in time. If so, I’m sure it’ll be great.
