Achieving Your Heart’s Desire has Nothing to Do with Money

by Brad Isaac on August 24, 2006

If you won a million dollars in the lottery today, what is the first thing you would do?

Would you quit your current job? Would you go back to school? Would you start a new business? Or would you spend it as fast as you could?

What would you do?

Brian Tracy says asking yourself this question is a good way to intuitively find out what your primary goal should be. I agree, it can open your mind to a lot of possibilities. Conservatively used, a million dollars could free you from the worries of your monthly bills. You could afford to follow your hearts desire.
I know a guy who became a millionaire by starting, building and then selling his own business. But that is not his success story.

Now he works a 9-5 job where he makes a middle class income some people would frown on, considering his large bank account.

Some of you may wonder why he would choose a mid-level management job like this. Is that what millionaires do – strive for middle class jobs? He could start another business. He could get on the board of some big company and coast along. He could retire on some island. So why would he choose a job that many would consider “ho-hum”?

His reason was simple. He can afford to do whatever he wants. And what he wants is to work in a nice setting with nice people.

Which brings me to an important question.

Did it take a million dollars for him to become a middle manager? If he had taken some night classes and burned a little midnight oil, couldn’t he have done the same?

The point is if you are feeling like you can’t do what you want to do because you lack the funds, think again.

My friend never asked what he would want to do with his life if he had won the lottery. He didn’t know his heart’s desire was to hold a mid-level management job in a nice environment. As a result he wasted all that precious time becoming a millionaire.

Long ago my sister asked me this question. I don’t want to become a millionaire so I answered her that I would have ten trousers and three good mocassins. Of course, after this answer it became a joke in our family how big my ambition is! She herself immediately said: this way you don’t need to win the lottery to became happy! hehe!

She and my mother soon gave me two beatiful trousers and I receive five old trousers from a cousin. An got the shoes.

I will answer this question one more time, and the answer won’t be so different.
