When I recently migrated my blog from Blogger (hosted on my own server) to Serendipity, I discovered that my host was caching the .htaccess file for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Any time I made a change, I would have to wait for the cache to refresh before my new settings took affect. This could be why your .htaccess redirects were not working (it was for me).
