What Everybody Ought To Know About Getting A Raise

Posted under Goals and Goal Setting

You’ve spend the last three hours trying to get the house clean, the kids in bed, and get some laundry done so you’ll have clean clothes to wear to work in the morning. As you collapse at your computer to do yet more work that your boss needs first thing in the morning, you realize something - you need a raise.

You spend eight hours a day at work, and then another two hours every night at home working a little more on projects for your company. You know your time is worth more than you’re being paid for it, but the idea of asking for a raise is intimidating.

The good news is that people successfully get raises every single day. What’s the big secret? An assertive nature.

Sure, talking about financial matters is certainly anxiety-inducing, but if you don’t ask, it may never come up in conversation. Be sure that you ask in a non-threatening tone, and don’t just tell your boss that you need a raise, offer some reasons why you are worthy of a raise.

Be sure you do your research before you ask. Look at company policy on wage increase, and look around at what other employers pay for performance like yours.   You might even want to let your boss know how hard you’ve been working and how important your work has been to the company.

Keep in mind that money doesn’t have to be a threatening subject. Try to keep an open line of communication with your boss about where you are now in your career and what your future plans are. It will make the next conversation about a raise that much easier.
