How To Be An A-List Blogger Without Quitting Your Day Job

by Brad Isaac on August 18, 2007

Jay White over at Dumb Little Man has posted a very informative piece on how he has created a very popular blog (~70,000 RSS readers) without quitting his day job. I discovered a few tips I hadn’t considered before and a new utility called Feed Digest I am going to take for a spin after I finish this post.

I have to say, his schedule is scary. So either he’s just head over heels in love with what he’s doing or a major insomniac. Either way, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of fun time in the mix. I am sure there’s a lot of profit though :)

My schedule is mine and it may not work for anyone but me. Nevertheless, here goes. First I get up damn early – we’re talking 4AM!

  • From 4:00-6:00: I write for Dumb Little Man, audit the articles submitted by readers, or audit the freelance work people want me to post.
  • 6:00-6:15: I shower.
  • 6:15-7:00: I read and respond to Dumb Little Man emails.
  • 7:00-11:30: I work my normal job (from the house)
  • 11:30-Noon: If time allows, I think of and research topics for tomorrow’s Dumb Little Man posts
  • Noon-5:00: Normal job
  • 5:00-8:30: Family time
  • 8:30-Midnight: Check stats on Dumb Little Man, post more, read more emails, etc.
  • Midnight: go to bed

That’s something else isn’t it? Candidly, aside from the getting up at 4am (I get up at 6:30) I do keep a similar schedule, but I am determined to cut this back significantly by focusing on my top 2-3 most profitable actions and cutting away the rest.

Unfortunately, it’s sad truth of life. If you want to be successful in something, you should dedicate yourself to it completely. The fact he didn’t quit his job yet means he had to quit many other things… All comes at some cost.

I’m not quite that dedicated to my blogging yet. Of course, I’m finishing up an IT degree from the University of Phoenix, which takes up whatever time isn’t going to work or family. Once I get my degree, I hope to spend more time working on my blogging.

I get up at 5 AM. I can’t function on 4 hours of sleep though.

@sleeping dude, yes, I agree, it all comes at a cost and you have to dedicate time and boatloads of energy. I was more referring to the 4 hours of sleep. I can do that once or twice, but then become zombie man.
