A quick note to let you know I've put together a new build of Achieve-IT! goal software for Windows computers.  Like Steve Austin, this version is better, stronger and faster than it's been before.

I've spent a lot of time cleaning and polishing the little stuff so it looks better too.  (I'll list out the changes later) But for the early adopters, you can download the installer here:

Achieve-IT! Desktop Release Candidate 3 (build 2.99.3138)

Unless I hear any bad news about this, this will be the final version of the Desktop app.  The sync component and Pocket PC update will soon follow.

So please take it for a spin and let me know how it does. :)

Update: For people who use European style date settings only: There is a file called A.I_Euro_dates.mdb in the Achieve it folder. Delete the A.I.mdb file and rename the A.I_Euro_dates.mdb to A.I.mdb. This should fix the registration problem.

New Beta of Achieve-IT! Goal Setting Software http://persistenceunlimited.com/2008/05/new-beta-of-achieve-it-goal-setting-software/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2008/05/new-beta-of-achieve-it-goal-setting-software/#comments Thu, 08 May 2008 00:42:03 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/2008/05/new-beta-of-achieve-it-goal-setting-software/ I'm both proud, giddy and a bit lightheaded to announce the latest Beta of Achieve-IT! goal software for Windows OS machines.

This is version 2.92.3047 which has the following enhancements:

  1. New systray icon located next to the clock
  2. Minimize Achieve-IT! to the systray or Maximize back out of it
  3. Quick entry of goals by right clicking the systray and choosing Add
  4. Exit from systray (right click and choose exit)
  5. Quick entry bar on the main screen of Achieve-IT!  (Enter your goal and hit the enter key)

Logic:  The systray feature will become more important as syncing is introduced in the coming builds.  I'll need part of A.I. running if you want to sync at any time.

This beta also fixes the following issues:

  1. Repaired Top Menus
  2. Fixed completed goals screen for display issues
  3. Fixed a display issue on the home screen where the Home button disappeared.
  4. Repaired a display issue on the Manage screen where the buttons were not aligning properly in certain circumstances.
  5. Repaired a refresh issue when using quick entry from the Home screen
  6. Fixed an issue where multiple systray icons would appear during quick entry.

How To:

This Beta requires the freeware Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 installed.  And a Windows OS machine Vista, XP, Server 2000+, etc.  Please install that before running Achieve-IT! software.

1.  Back up your Achieve-IT! desktop database by making a copy of A.I.mdb in the Achieve-IT! program directory.  This is especially important for registered users who are doing real goal management in the Beta versions.

2.  Download and install the freeware Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 (you may already have this installed)

3.  Download and install the new Achieve-IT! beta.

4.  UK and European users will want to delete the A.I.mdb in the install folder and rename the file A.I_Euro_dates.mdb to A.I.mdb.  Otherwise, the program will error out on launch.  What the A.I._Euro_dates file does is compensates for regional differences in how dates are handled by your computer vs. mine.

5.  Try and break it. :)

6.  Have fun.

As always, I appreciate your comments and bug reports in the comments field below.

Thanks for playing!

How Many Failures Are You Willing To Endure? http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/07/how-many-failures-are-you-willing-to-endure/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/07/how-many-failures-are-you-willing-to-endure/#comments Mon, 30 Jul 2007 01:38:19 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/07/how-many-failures-are-you-willing-to-endure/

It started out as a simple task. Build a software installer to deploy my new version of Achieve-IT! goal software for desktop, Pocket PC as well as the WiFi and ActiveSync components. Everything is working great, except for the installer.

It is a complex project. The entire installer hinges on 11 separate programs playing nicely together. Like tumbling dominoes, each program has to sequentially build so the next one’s dependencies are built and so on.

I elicited help from my friend Sasha and he is about as baffled as I am.
It installs everything, but it seems to unregister a .dll on the Pocket PC side – this wrangling is what developers commonly call “.dll hell.” The .dll in question is a critical component creates the program’s database connection. With no database connection, there is no Pocket PC application and the sync becomes a needless application.

Software development has taught me know how Edison must have felt. Like Edison responded when asked if he would give up after ‘failing’ 700 times to create the filament for the light bulb… He responded that he did not fail, but instead discovered 700 ways that didn’t work. For me, each failed build brings me closer.

So I would ask, how many failures are you willing to endure before you decide it can’t be done?

I’ll tell you when I’ll stop. When it’s done.

I may not break through today, tomorrow or the next, but it will happen; one way or another. I hope it won’t take me 700 tries. But if it does then that means I’ve done something very few people can do.

Ultimately, creating something new – be it a new invention or a new life – is always going to be fraught with setbacks and delays. It’s part of the process. So there is no need to fight it. Setbacks are where everyone else quits.

But you and I can’t quit during these challenges. Persistence is what makes you and me different than others. Climbing to the other side of the mountain even though people say it’s “impossible” or “can’t be done” has got to be our specialty.

Experts told me from nearly day 1 that my project was impossible. They said things like “Nobody takes goal setting seriously.” “You’ll never make enough money to survive.”

Developers with 10 years experience over me thought it unlikely – maybe even impossible for this project to come together without shelling out 10’s of thousands of dollars for a team of developers.

Fact is, I got help with some parts. I am not an interface guy. And I needed some assistance fixing the sync components and other odds and ends. But I don’t have a team working for me and I haven’t spent $10,000 or even $2,000 over the years.

Recently, an upper level management type implied that I somehow bought the Achieve-IT! software and re-branded it. “It’s just not very realistic that you could do something this big without a team.”

Oh really? I have to say that I am still curious how someone could look with their own eyes at an existing product that someone built and still say “it’s not realistic you did this.”

I guess the point of me writing this is to say one failure is ok, 100 failures is a whole lot better. If you don’t fail and fail a lot you probably aren’t stretching yourself. You aren’t creating, inventing or designing extraordinary results. Failing, and adjusting your actions and failing again is how success happens.

Staying in the safe zone (i.e. where failure never happens) ensures you won’t be criticized, but you’ll probably never impress either. And I’m not just talking about other people. Don’t you want to impress yourself? Don’t you want to stand at the top of the mountain and take it all in?

If so, you have to be willing to endure failure and the people who won’t shut up about it. These obstacles will be there. We’ve known this all along. But the obstacles make us better, more accomplished and eventually more successful.

The Achieve-IT! Blog Turns 2 Today! http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/07/the-achieve-it-blog-turns-2-today/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/07/the-achieve-it-blog-turns-2-today/#comments Tue, 10 Jul 2007 21:17:45 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/07/the-achieve-it-blog-turns-2-today/

It’s been a great ride these past two years.

Since the very beginning, here are some of the great life boosting articles:

We’ve discovered The 5-Minute Productivity Breakthrough
We’ve seen Why Birds Never Have Any Money
We’ve become motivated to exercise
And doubled our typing speed
We’re no stranger to organizing with Kaizen
We aren’t afraid of anything including success
We’ve improved our optimism
We’ve improved our goal setting
We’ve woken up with a caffeine nap.
We now bind our own books at home
Heck we’ve even gotten in some dog training

And so much more…..

But this is only the beginning.

But really, I couldn’t…well, if you insist…

Sorry, I was distracted by your offer of a donation…

Back to the topic at hand. If you are new to Achieve-IT! be sure and get the RSS feed, it’s quick, it’s affordable (free). C’mon, I’ve got a wife and kids … and you’ve got a mouse with a clicker. All you have to do is click, subscribe and my kids get another meal. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating again, you caught me. You’re a quick one. Don’t tell my wife ok? She hates it when I use the kids as an excuse for you to sign up.

If you are still reluctant, and who would be after a large buildup like that? That was a better buildup than George Bush’s Shock and Awe if I don’t say so myself. But if you’re still unsure, at least bookmark the blog by hitting ctrl-D. Of course clicking the RSS link is less effort – who has time to hit 2 keys on the keyboard when it can all be handled with a mouse click? But I’ll settle for a CTRL-D at this point. Oh and your donation of course…

Editor’s note: Long time readers to my blog will recognize the above as a joke, they will have chuckled and given each other a virtual slap on the back. Then in the hundreds, they will have submitted this post to del.icio.us and then gone out for a big steak dinner. If you are new to this site, take it to mean I’m just overjoyed to have made it this far. Kudos to my long term readers and welcome to all my new readers.

Need a Few Good People To Sync Their Goals http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/05/need-a-few-good-people-to-sync-their-goals/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/05/need-a-few-good-people-to-sync-their-goals/#comments Thu, 03 May 2007 22:46:58 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/05/need-a-few-good-people-to-sync-their-goals/

Well, after a long fought battle, we finally have a working sync component. This is very exciting for me personally, because it has been the most ambitious personal project I’ve ever undertaken. Many months of hair pulling and setbacks has now come to an end – or at least I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

With the help of SQLCE master Sasha from VisArts (http://visarts.de/), we’ve produced a component that far exceeds my original wishes. It syncs through Activesync and wifi – and has enough framework built in to sync over the Internet.

This is one of those projects where the sheer scale of possibilities and technology became fun and exciting. Opening up the Pocket PC and desktop versions of Achieve-IT! to Internet sync opens so many different avenues it’s staggering (web services, servers, collaboration, the possibilities are endless….)

Ok, let me get my head out of the clouds for a minute.

What I’m looking for is 5-6 people who want to participate in this exciting milestone of my life as well as your own lives by being the first to enjoy what I think is the best goal setting tool ever developed in human history. What you would be doing is helping to beta test the new version of Achieve-IT! desktop and Pocket PC along with the Sync component.

A few strongly desired qualifications for beta testing:

1. I’d prefer to work with you if you have both the desktop and Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) versions of Achieve-IT! goal software so you are familiar with how the software works.
2. It would help if you would be available for instant message chat to resolve any specific issues you are having so I can work fast and get a final release to the public.
3. *Required* Must be familiar with how to use Windows explorer, how to copy and paste files and how to extract .zip archives. I don’t have a lot of time right now to explain how to find the “Program Files” directory on your computer or Pocket PC. Why? Building installers is the last thing I do before a release – they take a lot of time to put together.
4. Patience and a willingness to test new settings would be helpful.

If you are interested and meet the requirements, please post a response to this message and I’ll contact you via email.

Thanks :)

72 Hour special on Achieve-IT! Goal Management Software http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/03/72-hour-special-on-achieve-it-goal-management-software/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/03/72-hour-special-on-achieve-it-goal-management-software/#comments Sat, 24 Mar 2007 08:00:28 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/2007/03/72-hour-special-on-achieve-it-goal-management-software/

My wife’s minivan is very sick.

I knew it was bad off. We were riding up to the store the other day and the van was making some unnerving sounds. I thought it had a flat tire it was banging so loud. It gave new meaning to the term “bucket of bolts” as we went the few blocks to the grocery.

The diagnoses was not good. Power steering is leaking fluid in 2 places – requiring a new fluid pump and overhaul, a transmission bearing that needs replacing (ala taking apart the entire transmission), oil leaking into the timing area – oh and while they were on the subject the timing belt was going out and needed replacing. And three or four other odds and ends just to make it interesting.

The shop gave us an estimate of $3,000 before it can be given a clean bill of health.

Neither one of us were particularly happy with the amount of work needed to be done on the van. But it is obviously necessary to keep things rolling smoothly around here.

So it occurred to me something Jay Abraham said, with a little bit of Dave Ramsey thrown in. Although we do have the cash to cover the bill, I had it slated for something else. The image of Dave Ramsey standing with both hands on his hips saying “don’t you dare charge that” came to mind.

But one of Jay Abraham’s business mantras is that your business should always be able to generate money above and beyond normal sales numbers when you need it to.

With that in mind, I had an idea. Let my business, or more specifically Achieve-IT! goal planning software sales, pay for my wife’s van repairs. That way, we wouldn’t have to worry about it.

To give you incentive to help us out with this unexpected bill, I’ll give you a special 25% discount price on Achieve-IT! software. I’ve set up a special page you can use for the next 72 hours to get it at this price. When you order, it goes into a separate Van repair account.

To get 25% off Achieve-IT software you must order through this link!

After 72 hours (Tuesday March 27th, 4pm sharp) I’ll take down the page and stop accepting orders at that price. I think at that price and 72 hours, we should have no problem covering the full cost of repair. So if you haven’t yet gotten your copy of Achieve-IT! now is a great time to take advantage. If you already have a copy, you might consider gifting one for a friend – at least tell them about the special.

You’d be really helping us out and getting a great deal at the same time.

Thank you for your support!

- Brad Isaac

P.S. Again, to get 25% off Achieve-IT! you must order through this page!

Wow…What A Birthday! http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/11/wowwhat-a-birthday/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/11/wowwhat-a-birthday/#comments Fri, 17 Nov 2006 03:53:59 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/11/wowwhat-a-birthday/

There’s something special that happens when you give someone else a gift on your birthday. If you get my newsletter, you’ll know I sent you a copy of the book Lighting Your Personal Fire. Whoa what a response! I haven’t yet caught up on all the emails, but I really appreciate everyone who took the time to write and the nice words you had to say about it.

I also celebrated by discounting the desktop version of my software 50%. I expected a few of you to take me up on the offer, but once again, I underestimated the number. I lost count after about 120!

I have to say, the past few days have been some of the busiest in my life – but it was great!

I promised a quick turnaround on a new version of Achieve-IT! 2007 that addressed reported bugs since Monday. So without further ado. The new build can be downloaded here. Get it while it’s hot. jester

For those of you who like seeing change-logs, you can view the list that reflects most everything that has changed since the version released in July. See it here. (Warning…it’s a long list – keep in mind there’s more I didn’t list for one reason or another.)

Finally, I’ll say a big thank-you for a great birthday! :)

New Achieve-IT! Help File http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/11/new-achieve-it-help-file/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/11/new-achieve-it-help-file/#comments Thu, 16 Nov 2006 03:27:45 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/11/new-achieve-it-help-file/

Achieve-IT! software users.  It occurred to me that Achieve-IT! 2007 has the old 1.x help file when you go to Utility>Help.

I’ve created a new help file in pdf format that you can download here.  It requires Adobe reader freeware available from www.adobe.com  Tip: Right click the link above and choose save as and save the file to your desktop computer.

I’ve also been coding a new build to address some issues that have been reported since Monday.   I hope to have it to you by tomorrow.  P.S. The next build will include the new help file.

Goal Software Minor Update – bugfixes http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/07/achieve-it-goal-software-minor-update-bugfixes/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/07/achieve-it-goal-software-minor-update-bugfixes/#comments Thu, 06 Jul 2006 06:01:36 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/?p=509

Screen showing goal export to Microsoft Outlook Calendar and Task List

While I was building the next major version of Achieve-IT! desktop edition software today it occurred to me I had built and packaged an earlier bug fix version a few weeks ago but I never uploaded it!
This addresses most of the bugs that were reported to me.
If you are not having any problems, then you probably don’t need the update and you can wait for the major release.  Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.smile
But in the meantime, there is this version to keep you on track.
Fixes:
    * Fixed a bug where if you added goals on the fly, you might get a message that says: “An unhandled exception has occurred…”"

    * Added Range option to refine module
    * Fix date in Refine wizard (if no date chosen, then set date is pushed)

    * Add new 1, 5, 10, Lifetime options for legacy users

    * Fixed refine wizard so it no longer clears “set date”

    * Reformatted Refine wizard to fix settings for pitfals, etc.

    * Fix Refine wizard so that it doesn’t lose 1, 5, 10 year goal designation

    * Lots of code clean up (optimizing)

    * Fix error in Plan of action where 1, 5, L, buttons appear

    * fixed bug in brainstorm wizard where a goal “Enter your goals here” could occur

    * Fix Finish button so re-entering brainstorm makes it a “next” button again

    * Fix internal database error that might cause sorting errors in some circumstances

    * Set Next button in Brainstorm wizard to enter goal if you forget to click the enter key first (start with “Finish” button)

    * Fix a bug in Refine wizard where if you didn’t reword a goal it would blank the goal
How to install on your Windows computer:
1.  Download the Microsoft .NET Framework and install
2.  Download and install the 1.3.6 version of Achieve-IT! software: Achieve-IT_1.3.6_setup.exe (2952.7K)
3.  Run Achieve-IT! and then click the vision button
4.  Achieve-IT! software will walk you through each step of the way so you can build a great plan for reaching your goals.
5.  When you are ready to register your copy visit Smartgoalsoftware.com
Enjoy!

Help! I’m stuck and could use your feedback http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/06/help-im-stuck-and-could-use-your-feedback/ http://persistenceunlimited.com/2006/06/help-im-stuck-and-could-use-your-feedback/#comments Mon, 12 Jun 2006 05:50:28 +0000 Brad Isaac http://persistenceunlimited.com/?p=502

You can help me build a better Achieve-IT! program. smile

Currently, I am working on bug fixes and software improvements.  But things get slow over the summer months and tend to put a squeeze on the business side of things.  It makes it tough to program new features and improvements when the electric company comes collecting and money is tight.scared

This year, in an effort to get ahead of the “dog days of summer” I am taking a different approach.  Instead of blindfolding myself and sticking a pin into a list of ideas, I thought there had to be a better way.  So, I decided I’d get your opinions on what would make it a better piece of software and perhaps a better direction for my software business.

What I’ve done is created a small survey you can take in less than 5 minutes.  It uses “survey logic” so it ranges between only 8 to 11 questions.  Your answers will help me figure out what’s right, what’s wrong and what needs improvement.  You’d be doing me a huge favor by taking it. idea

To say thanks, for every 10 people who take the survey, I will give away one copy of Achieve-IT! software to one of the participants (either desktop or Pocket PC – your choice!).  Names will be drawn at random and will receive notification by email.

Click here to take my survey
