Last Minute shopping? Don’t forget the workers

by Brad Isaac on December 24, 2005

If you are going to be out today doing some last minute shopping today, you have a huge opportunity to make someone’s day. How? Show a simple kindness to the salesperson, the cashier, the waiter or waitress, or whomever is serving you.

My wife made a quick run to the grocery store this morning and came back asking “does everyone hate their job today?” I told her. “Yes honey, they do.”

As someone who had to work my share of Christmas eves and Christmas days, I can tell you from experience, everyone who works today hates their job. It may be irrational, but many people feel it’s unfair the store is even open today. “Everyone else is off work, having a great time…while I have to slave at this crappy job” they think. They have family and friends they can’t see or be with today because they are serving you and me.

Many people will become impatient with them. Many will be rude and hurtful. But you and I should choose the higher road. It is so easy to do. We can choose to think of these people before we leave for the restaurant. We can think of a small gift or tip to give the stressed-out employee before we go to the store. If you do take this step you will be rewarded greatly. I am not going to share what is going to happen just yet. Instead I want you to be surprised by the reward – but you will likely be touched by the outcome.

Imagine the surprise and joy on someone’s face when you hand them a gift and say “I know how tough it must be to work on a day like today. I appreciate you doing it and this is a small gift for you.”

The gift doesn’t have to be anything big. Wrapping the gift does help though. I know some of the gifts I have given in the past and would be happy to give suggestions, but I thought it would be fun for us all to share our ideas by commenting to this post.

It will also be cool to post what happens when you do a “Random Kindness”. What happened? Would you do it again?
