Getting Bitten by the Moleskine Bug

Posted under Thoughts, Tools

Moleskine goal notebookToday I finally gave in to the hype and purchased my first Moleskine Notebook. I have seen seemingly hundreds of blog posts on Moleskines and I just had to see what all the chatter was all about. It’s a small entry fee to play. Just $9.99 - $12.00 if you include the mints I added on. smile

The one I bought was the small ruled notebook (journal) I could slip into my back pocket to jot down thoughts, ideas for my goals and who knows..maybe a journal entry here or there.

One influencing factor was I spent an hour today trying to repair my Desktop/PDA Notes program. I use Phatnotes by phatware and when it isn’t syncing, it’s a nightmare to get it working again. Dock the Pocket PC, 385 unresolved items, undock, tweak, repeat the process…I am down to 45 unresolved now.

My first impression was it feels high quality. The paper is “acid free” which I assume is a good thing wink. It has the elastic band around it to hold the cover shut and there is a small pocket in the back cover. I checked…there wasn’t any money in there. But I confess, I thought for a minute or two of using the pocket to keep some cash and a card or two so I could ditch my wallet.

Now for a pen. I have a nice Mont Blanc fountain pen, but the ink flow is so fast the writing tends to end up thick. Since the lines are so small on the page, I’d like to use a fine point - I’ll do some looking around and see if I can find one that compliments the moleskine.

Do you use a Moleskine notebook? If so, what type? What type of writing instrument do you use with yours?

I’m liking the uni-bal jetstream pens. They say they use a hybrid ink that is somewhere between a rollerball and a ball point. As a result you get smooth writing and quick drying. Works well with my moleskines. I like to carry a couple extras (blue and red) to compliment my basic black. They sell for about 4 for $10. Not a Mont Blanc fountain pen but I’m enjoying them.

Janet, I’ve used some of the pre-jetstream Uniballs and liked them. I’ll have to give the jetstreams a try.

As far as the Mont Blanc fountain pens, I’ve had nothing but trouble with mine. Out of the box it never wrote properly. It would stop and scratch. I eventually sent mine off to Richard Binder for repair. He fixed the flow issue, but now the text ends up looking like you are writing with a magic marker.
