Opera: the most productivity oriented browser comes to Pocket PC

by Brad Isaac on January 18, 2006

Today is one of the days I’ve been anxiously awaiting. Opera browser, my browser of choice comes to Pocket PC in the form of a beta release. The beta version will let you play for free for 45 days. After which I am guessing it will cost $29 to register.

I’ve tried it and it looks great on my Dell Axim X51V. As expected, it is a scaled down version from their desktop, so you don’t have the extras such as notes, panels, email and IRC clients. But it is fast and a worthy competitor to both Pocket Internet Explorer and Access (which currently isn’t compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0). It renders the pages differently than the other Pocket PC browsers to where it crams just about everything in without it looking crazy or two small to read.

One surprise they decided to release a Windows Mobile 2003 version after rumors circulated they wouldn’t be able to due to coding limitations. So it looks like far more Pocket PC owners get to try it out too.

“Opera Mobile 8.5 for Pocket PC offers unmatched speed and usability, which is why we included it on our latest Sharp W- ZERO3 flagship device for the advanced Japanese market” says Tadasu Tsuchihashi, Executive director, Willcom INC. “Thanks to Opera Mobile’s unique rendering technology the Web surfing experience on Pocket PC devices is now remarkably close to that of a PC.”

Opera 8.5 for Windows Mobile Pocket PC supports all major Web standards, including CSS2, DOM 2 and JavaScript, and offers a fast, secure and user-friendly Internet experience unlike any other on these devices. Based on Opera’s latest core code, Opera 8.5 for Windows Mobile Pocket PC includes Opera’s rendering technology that dynamically reformats Web pages to fit the width of any screen size.
