Why Getting Fed-Up Can be Good…

by Brad Isaac on April 13, 2006

Do you ever get one of those nagging feelings that just won’t let up?

I’ve been wrestling with that type of feeling lately with regards to Achieve-IT! desktop software.  There was something bothering me I just couldn’t put my finger on until recently.

I was bothered – no bored – with the appearance (i.e interface).  So much so, I told my buddy Brandon I could barely stand to look at it any more.  By the way, he is the friend who built some new buttons for A.I.

He said "Man, you look at it every day…other people don’t see it as being that bad,"  But I still felt that it could be so much more.

So this past Saturday, I spent some time freestyle drawing some mockup interfaces in Photoshop.  I used Brandon’s new button style and drew out some ideas.   About 5pm, I struck gold with the layout and interface I was looking for.

I immediately got to work, putting the new interface together.  The hours passed quickly.  I couldn’t sleep.  I wanted to have the main screen reflecting the new style before I went to bed.  When I finally found a stopping point around Midnight, was still excited about the new look and the new options.  My wife patiently listened as I went on and on about it.  I knew a discussion about programming interfaces in the middle of the night is probably boring as dirt to someone who is not into computers, but I couldn’t help myself.

So getting fed up can be good.  Being fed up can break you out of your
comfort zone.  Feeling fed-up and dissatisfied makes you want to change
things – to make them better.

So I have been working virtually non-stop since.  I am putting it all together – tuning this and tweaking that.  I get a little twinge of excitement every time I launch Achieve-IT! now.  It looks just the way I wanted it to.
