Have Goals You Can Be Proud Of

by Brad Isaac on May 21, 2007

Setting personal goals is the key to motivating yourself as time goes on, but we all too often think that goal setting is something that should only be done in early high school as college and life plans stretch out ahead. This, though, couldn’t be further from the truth.

Goal setting is essential for every individual. Without goals, we uselessly tread the water of life that surrounds us. We get nowhere, and we are frustrated as that water seems to continually wash over our heads. We drown in tasks, wondering what “life” was ever supposed to mean.   The best way out of this trap is to set achievable goals. The more often you can look forward to something the more often you can see that island on the horizon, the more often you’ll feel like you’re in control of your life. You’ll finally feel like life means something.

There are lots of ways to get started with goal setting, but if you’re like me, your computer is your life, and while you could simply consider making a list in notepad of everything you want to accomplish, that’s not a terribly interactive idea. Those of you who are dedicated Achieve-IT! software users, though, understand that the best way to set, define, and accomplish goals is by putting the software to work for you.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your personal assistant gave you call each day, once a week, once a month, or once a year to check in with you about how you’re progressing with your personal goals? While most of us can’t afford a personal assistant, Achieve-IT! software can function in the exact same way. Most users are surprised at how simple the download and set-up is.

When you initially open the software, click “Brainstorm.” You’ll have the ability to make lists of your short and long term goals. You’ll be asked to think about things you want to handle in the next year, in the next five years, in the next ten years, and beyond. For example, got a class reunion coming up in the next year? Want to shed a few pounds so you look great when you walk in the door? Enter that as one of your goals. Credit card debt piling up around you? Enter paying it off as one of your five year goals. Once you’ve created that goal, you have the chance to carefully refine it. From simply restating it so you’re very clear on what you’re supposed to achieve, listing out the rewards and benefits that accomplishing this goal will give you, discussing the pitfalls you could encounter, to setting a clear date for accomplishment, refining each item on your brainstorming list is an essential step in making this software work hard for you.

The best part, though, is that you can choose how your personal assistant named Achieve-IT! reminds you of your goal. Whether you want it on your Outlook calendar or task list or you’d prefer to receive calendar alarms and entries through the Motivate Me! feature, Achieve-IT! actually helps you get it done more than any simple pen and paper list could.

If you’re among the Achieve-IT! users out there, you know how valuable goal setting can be. If you’re still treading water, though, consider setting some goals for yourself. Whether you choose to use Achieve-IT! or not to help you accomplish those goals, creating the goal in your mind is the first step to seeing the islands of life arrive on your horizons.
