The biggest obstacle for many people when first starting out goal setting is getting over fear. They fear goal setting won’t work. They fear people might make fun of them when they start to make changes in their lives. They fear trying and failing. The thing is, we are already setting goals every single day.
Whether you realize it or not you are setting goals. Think about your car or your computer for a second… How did those items come into your life? Did you wake up one day and they were just magically sitting there? Of course not!
You formed a picture in your mind and convinced yourself that you wanted a particular type of car and a particular type of computer. And then you made a plan and then went out to get them.
That, my friends is goal setting. It is nothing magical. It is nothing mystical. But it is a skill that I recommend you master. Because if you master goal setting, then you can repeat the success of buying the car you want or the success of buying the computer you want on a much scale.
Achieving goals can become a habit you can develop where getting what you want becomes almost automatic.
So whatever fear you may be feeling with regards to dreaming or setting goals it’s time to give up on that fear – starting today. Don’t forget… You are setting goals anyway.

What you say is true; the fear of going after something you care about deeply can be daunting and I think it keeps many from achieving what they really want. Thank you for your series on goals; I will read it with interest.
Ria – Yes, it is a killer for some people. I’ll never forget the time this couple came to me to ask advice about buying a house. I simply asked “What type of house do you want?”
They said they didn’t know. So I recommended they tour a few open houses or call a Realtor. I’ll never forget the wife’s response… “Oh we could never do that… we aren’t ready to buy and we’re afraid to look too poor.”
I was flabbergasted. “What? You don’t have to buy a house just because you tour it during an open house.”
But they wouldn’t budge. They wanted me to recommend a house based on their yearly income only.
I couldn’t help them. So I said, tour a few houses and get back to me when you have a house in mind you want.
That was probably 13 years ago and they never got back in touch so… who knows if they every worked up the nerve to look at a house that was for sale.
