Save Lots-O-Money At The Pump

by Brad Isaac on May 27, 2008

We all can use some help saving some bucks at the pump.

The site Drive Smarter Challenge lets you enter your make and model of car and then kicks back a roadmap of strategies you can use to cut your gas bill.

I popped in my 2004 Toyota Solara and got back 6 strategies estimated to save me $430 a year.   Most of the tips were basic stuff like filling up your tires and clearing heavy junk (i.e. golf clubs) out of the trunk.  But it would be cool if some other people got some specific tips like “Install a sneezledoodle in your carburetor and save $1500 a year.”

Thanks for the tip, Brad. Unfortunately, it’s pretty much stuff I already do. I keep my tires inflated, use the right oil, curb aggressive driving (although I live in New Jersey, so sometimes that’s not optional), combine trips, and “drive smarter” around town. About the only tip out of 6 that I haven’t done is get rid of some weight, although except for the back seat in my minivan, there isn’t much left to jetison.

I think this site is pretty much written for “morons”, who have never given any thought whatsoever to fuel economy.

Thanks Brad, for the recommendation!

I’ll definitely clean out the trunk of my car this week (in addition to the other 5 tips!

Eric, while I agree it is some simple stuff, a reminder here and there never hurts. I knew about the ditching weight tip, but didn’t think about again until I went to the site. A peek in my trunk revealed my golf clubs, a heavy LCD mount, and a box of electronics i cleaned out of my office.

You can also get a higher milage with a stick shift car. I have a 98 civic, standard transmission, and I get higher mpg than the automatic transmission. Not to mention that it cost less brand new.
