Using a Neck Buddy to cool off

by Brad Isaac on July 26, 2005

With the heatwave hammering most of the US, I am sure I am in good company when I say “It’s HOT! Damn HOT!” With temperatures hitting 100 or more in some areas, it’s tough to get exercise, even if it’s just a walk around the block. One gadget (can you call a cloth item a gadget?!?!) that I’ve used for years to help keep a little cooler on days like we’ve had is a Neck Buddy.

The neck buddy is like a bandanna filled with these crystals that expand when soaked in cool water. You then wrap it around your neck and it’s like a cool compress that will help you lower your body temperature by a few degrees. The effect does wear off after 15-20 minutes but can be extended by turning and adjusting it.

How do they work?

When placed around the neck, these neck wraps lowers your body temperature by cooling the carotid arteries in the neck, and provides an evaporative cooling system for your body to help relieve heat stress. The neck wraps work best if exposed to the air. Keeping it covered under clothing will reduce the effectiveness of the cooling process.

Can I use it on my Dog?

Yes! Since the cooling mechanisms for dogs are nowhere near as efficient as those for humans, try a Neck Buddy or NeckBandoo (under supervision) for your pet too. Be sure to feed them plenty of cool fluids and follow the same instructions as you would follow for yourself.

oops..it appears the Neck Buddy company went out of business, so you may have to check eBay for an original or get one of the new NeckBandoos which I’d assume is the same thing.

Can’t say for sure, but the best place to look is in nice gardening stores. The ones with the more expensive outdoor furnishings, birdhouses, etc. I see them near us all the time.

Good luck with your search.
