Me the Maytag Repair Man?
Posted under DIYOur dishwasher went out a couple weeks ago. So my wife and I took turns washing the dishes by hand. It really wasn’t all that bad. Actually, something to keep your hands busy while you think.
Anyway, we decided we did need a dishwasher, if only to make it easier for our young kids to keep their dishes from piling up in the sink.
We went up to Home Depot because they had the same model as we had before - it’s an ok model. It lasted us about 12 years so…
Well, the salesman at Home Depot was all ready to get us that one model out of the back when he mentioned that “last years” models were up front and on sale. We went to look and found a Maytag, which was much better than our old one for less money than the one we had chosen.
“It’ll be $50 for delivery and $60 to install” he told me.
I had never thought about it, but I asked him. “Hey, how hard is it to install a dishwasher?”
He told me it was really no problem - only three connections. On average, it will take 45 minutes to do one. I thought that was a bit optimistic, but I thought, if I could get it done under 3 hours…then great! We’ll save 1/3 the cost of the dishwasher if I DIY.
We bought the dishwasher and brought it home.
It wasn’t a flawless install, but I’d say it was much easier that I ever imagined. The only problems involved setting it the right height and having the water hose about 12 inches too short. It took some maneuvering, but both problems were fixed. It was sort of a headache to keep pulling it out of the recess and replacing it. In fact, I mangled some tile on the underside of the dishwasher when all was said and done. But 2 hours later, it was installed and washing our dinner dishes.
BTW, the salesman told us to try not rinsing the dishes before loading them. I’ve always rinsed first, but tonight, I gave it a try. They are still running so I’ll be interested to see if they are really clean or not.
Do you rinse your dishes first?
