Day Job Killer Review: Results Part 2

by Brad Isaac on February 18, 2007

This part of the review will cover the highly touted “Leveler” technique that is discussed in the Day Job Killer book.

Before I get into the discussion about this particular technique I do want to share that some of the stuff in the book is good. Some is based on sound copy-writing strategies. His Adwords bidding strategy is even more conservative than I use for my personal business.

But…most or all of this is covered in his other book Affiliate Project X which has some good info.

The leveler technique takes a lot more time and energy to put together. It requires your own domain name. It also requires a hosting service and it requires an autoresponder like Aweber.

It also requires a “history” of high performing ads. Without revealing his strategy, I’ll just say you will want to discover the ‘history’ of high performing ads for this new type of swipe file. It walks through a method of manually doing this or using the tool Keyword Elite – which is an excellent Adwords keyword finder. I already have Keyword Elite, so I used it and gathered a week’s worth of data.

With this historical data in hand and a “target” campaign, I turned off my better judgment and fired up the leveler technique – all for the benefit of my loyal readers. I hope you appreciate it. ;)

So I bought a domain name $8, rented some server hosting $20, set up my already existing Aweber auto responder. Whew!

I buckled my seat belt and put the leveler into action.

The leveler technique is an interesting method. Copywriters will recognize it as a “swipe file” method with a very aggressive twist.

For non-copywriters, a swipe file is basically a “tickler” file of high performing ads and headlines. If the copywriter gets stuck, he would typically go through this swipe file looking for ideas. The swipe file technique in DJK is much more aggressive.

Putting the leveler into action made me feel like I needed to wash my own mouth out with soap.

But I figured I couldn’t give my readers an honest assessment without applying the method exactly – in all it’s glory – or lack thereof. After all, you, dear reader, are worth it – you really are!

So what were the results of this experiment?

I honestly believed this would work very well. And although the strategy was ‘dirty’, it really should work.

So here are the results thus far…

After $200.00 in Adwords clicks – 312 clicks in all, I now have 8 subscribers to my list and have made $0 sales. So let’s add this up: $228 investment – $0 return.

Sound fun?

Now, to be entirely fair, I have to say that one thing did work extremely well. I got an incredibly high click through rate. Based on those results, I learned a different way to shape some of the ads for my Achieve-IT! software to drive more traffic to that site. But other than that, I am afraid someone who is new to affiliate marketing might find themselves weeping at about this stage of the game.

So even though the leveler technique makes sense on paper, there is still a level of experience, shrewdness and competence you have to apply to the process. You can’t possibly know what’s going on in your “target” campaign behind the scenes. So this is another one of the techniques that simply isn’t for beginners.

If you have 6 months or more of successful affiliate sales under your belt, you will probably learn a thing or two through applying the “leveller”. But if this is your first dip in the pool, I’m afraid you’ll drown or be eaten by sharks. Or drown and then be eaten by sharks – or partially eaten by sharks then drown and then a whale will will finish you off. But I digress…

This post is part of the Day Job Killer Review series. Be sure to subscribe for notifications when I test out the next method.

A concerned reader pointed out I might want to do an affiliate link to Day Job Killer to recover some of the costs of this project! I don’t want to link to it unless it works. Instead, I’ll link to a stuff I wholeheartedly recommend.

Keyword Elite has helped me locate loads of niche Adwords keywords. Keyword Elite’s sister software SEO Elite is a great tool for getting your site ranking up in Google. Within 1 week of using it, my domain smartgoalsoftware.com went from page 2 to page 1 – 5th position for the highly relevant search term goal software on Google. If you do decide to buy either Keyword Elite or SEO Elite from my affiliate links, I’ll throw in a copy of Taskblaze Pro software to say thanks for your support (please allow 24 hours for delivery).

Brad,

I really appreciate your efforts to test out the Day Job Killer techniques and report the results.

Your transparency in the process is refreshing.

Thanks,

Andrew thanks for the support.

Hey, it looks like you grew your hair back out. Did you or is that an old picture?

Wow, this is the only DayJobKiller review site that does not have Adsense ads on it :) to monetize this traffic.

Hi I’m Shonte. I’ve been researching DayJobKiller and I am kind of sceptical now, because I see all these ads that tell me that DJK is a scam or don’g get DJK get something else. I’ve been excited about DJK after I read it and thought that I should check out other sites to see if it is good of it is a scam and know I am a little confused. So, do you recommend getting DJK?

Hey Ramin, my site has no Adsense. And my PR keeps rising. Just don’t try and post a comment because I’ve had to turn comments off due to too much spam. Somehow even with comments off I still get about 20+ spam comments an hour.

Shontie most of those saying its no good in the subject line are trying to sell it… and yes it is good, very good… but not for newbies, not at all.
