Understanding Persuasion May Make It More Useful To You

Posted under Goals and Goal Setting

Persuasion is an important tool to have in today’s society. Often confused with manipulation, persuasion is actually the act of guiding individuals through the use of a rational thought process. Whether you’re trying to get them to adopt an idea or an action strategy, persuasion relies on logical appeals.

If you feel the need to use persuasion in a speech, presentation, or simply a conversation with others, consider your method of appeal very carefully. Some persuasions rely on appealing to reason through some method of logic or proof. Other persuasions rely on the emotional appeal, though these tend to be far less effective over time. Remember that not all people can be persuaded by the same thing. For example, while one lawmaker might be persuaded by the number of dead in Darfur, another might be persuaded only if his constituents’ interests are at stake in the region.

Keep in mind that as you’re making your presentation, while deception of some kind might seem like a good idea at the time, it’s likely to backfire on you. Other methods like employing the scientific method (or some form thereof) or a logical argument process will be far more helpful to you and are less likely to backfire in the end.
