The Secrets of Long Distance Relationships

by Brad Isaac on April 23, 2007

In many cases these days, it seems that long distance relationships are the norm rather than an exception to the rule. And if you thought maintaining a relationship was hard when the two of you were near each other, try working with it when the two of you are in different states or even different countries for weeks or months at a time. Luckily, though, there are a few things you can do to help make things easier.

First, as with any relationship, communicating with your partner is key. Talk, write, or text each other on a regular basis. Let your partner know what’s going on in your life – and if you’re about to launch into a rant, examine your feelings before doing so, and try to let your partner know. For example, if that creepy guy at work won’t leave you alone and you’re angry at your partner for not being there to help you with your problem, let him or her know that you’re feeling anxious, and the words that come out of your mouth or your head may be influenced by that.

Second, having the same level of commitment is pretty important in a long distance relationship. Whether you’re in the midst of a fairly open relationship, but you’re still serving as each other’s primary partners or you’re monogamous just to each other, it’s important to discuss it while you’re together, and to be honest about the situation.

Long distance relationships are difficult to maintain, but trusting your partner, discussing your needs, and communicating on a regular basis may help keep you together.

Thank YOU for spreading the word. You are the best!
