FreeMind – free mind mapping software

Posted under Tools

I’ve used the powerhouse Mind Manager software in the past to do some intense thinking. It is probably because of that I had no idea there was a free Mind Mapping tool called FreeMind that does basically the same thing.

I loaded it up last night and found that even though it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of Mind Manager, it is very similar. Just put a problem you want to solve in the middle of the map and then go to town entering sub-thoughts and ideas branched off from it.

FreeMind is easy to get started with the process. So if you have never tried mind mapping, this is an excellent way to get your feet wet.

“So you want to write a completely new metaphysics? Why don’t you use FreeMind? You have a tool at hand that remarkably resembles the tray slips of Robert Pirsig, described in his sequel to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance called Lila. Do you want to refactor your essays in a similar way you would refactor software? Or do you want to keep personal knowledge base, which is easy to manage? Why don’t you try FreeMind? Do you want to prioritize, know where you are, where you’ve been and where you are heading, as Stephen Covey would advise you? Have you tried FreeMind to keep track of all the things that are needed for that?”

Ohh man thanks!!!

I am sending this to my whole team. We’ve been doing it with Post-It notes. Which actually isn’t bad if you have the time, but this enables you to map quickly, so one can map any issue.

Sweet . . .

Cool! Depends on how large the post it note display is, you might have to scale back the print size. I am sure it will do better than post it notes as far as editing though.

I just found you, started looking around… oh, and here’s a mention of one of my all-time favourite freebies, FreeMind! — I’m delighted already.

One of those who used to tape little bits of paper all over the kitchen door when planning/outlining a book or script (anything at all complicated in the way of a writing task) until “mind mapping” software came along… although I must confess to discovering FreeMind only because I was browsing Tucows in an act of extreme morning procrastination!

So, now I’m eying your nice long list of posts with “Productivity” in the title, a goal for 2006… Thanks for delivering a new good morning read!
