Stressed? Build furniture for ultimate relaxation Part 2

Posted under DIY

Here’s part 2 of my project of building my son a bookcase.

I’m not sure if you can tell in the picture what is going on, but instead of using veneer, I ripped some very thin whitewood that would go on the edges. I used some gorilla glue and clamps to hold everything in place. After that, a router with a trim bit will be used to get everthing flush. You’ll never even know two pieces of wood were used. ;)

Sanding is also a big chore around this time. I had each of the shelves (not pictured) set up the same way. With the strips of whitewood covering the plys. Again, I used the router with a trim bit to even everything up and then sanded for what seemed to be forever.

Here you can see I have put in the three “stabilizer” shelves. They slide into the tracks I did with the router (see part 1) This was sort of tough to piece everything together because it’s so big. But they eventually all slid into place. Some glue, some dumbbells and 90′ angles kept everything lined up properly.

This is what I like to call the “clamp matrix”. Ain’t it pretty? Lots of clamps holding these pieces in place. You might be able to see I’ve put the backing on, this adds lots of stability to the project and keeps everything square.
